Per il primo round dei Playoffs Mondiali, otto team si sono scontrati in due gruppi per guadagnarsi un posto ai quarti di finali contro i team già scelti in base ai seed: Team Solo Mid, Moscow Five, Team WE ed i Taipei Assassins. Solo metà dei team avanzerà oggi, ogni match è stata una battaglia per la sopravvivenza nel torneo e la modalità best-of-one non ha dato seconde opportunità.

Girone A

Nel primo gruppo si sono scontrati nell’arena gli Azubu Frost, gli Invictus Gaming, i Counter Logic Gaming NA e gli SK Gaming. Il primo game è stato  un esplosivo avanti e indietro tra gli Azubu Frost e gli Invictus Gaming. Gli Invictus hanno ottenuto un buon vantaggio ad inizio game e sono riusciti a mantenerlo per tutta la prima metà della partita. Tuttavia, un disastroso fight al Baron ha permesso al team Frost di recuperare il vantaggio con una perdita minima e con uno steal del Baron. Prendendo campioni con un buono scaling come Jax, i Frost sono riusciti a resistere e con il loro potere in late-game sono riusciti a sconffiggere i loro avversari e a ribaltare il match.

Il secondo match importante del gruppo vedeva gli SK Gaming contro gli CLG NA, entrambi erano sotto di una partita dopo esser stati sconfitti rispettivamente dai Frost e dagli iG. Entrambi i team hanno puntato alla presenza globale nella mappa: gli SK prendendo Shen mentre i CLG NA hanno utilizzato ben tre Teleport. Dopo una furtiva kill del Baron, gli SK Gaming hanno provato a bussare alla porta del mid dei CLG. Questo ha dato la possibilità a  Doublelift di provare uno split-push con un minion sotto effetto di promote mentre il suo team manteneva la lane mid. Improvvisamente partì la corsa verso il Nexus! Nonostante gli SK avessero il Baron buff a loro favore, si è visto subito che i CLG erano in vantaggio sugli SK che non hanno potuto far altro che recallare e difendere. Un paio di rapidi teleport da parte dei CLG NA hanno portato il game ad una fine rapida. Nonostante il loro impressionante secondo game ne I CLG NA ne gli SK Gaming saranno in grado di avanzare alla fase successive del gruppo di qualificazione. Gli Azubu Frost affronteranno i TSM nel prossimo round, mentre gli Invictus si scontreranno con i Moscow Five.

Girone B

I Najin Sword, i Counter Logic Gaming Europe, I Saigon Jokers ed I Dignitas formano il secondo gruppo della giornata, ed in questo pomeriggio le partite sono stati tanto avvincenti quanto quelle della mattina. I Saigon Jokers ci hanno regalato una performance nel loro primo match contro i Najin Sword, ma come nel match  dei Frost contro gli iG, gli Sword hanno portato il game avanti fino a quando il loro late-game superiore non gli ha dato la possibilità di porre fine al match. Il resto del gruppo è sembrata una fase di riscaldamento per gli Sword per i rapidi game che hanno vinto contro i Dignitas ed i CLG EU. Maknoon ha vinto con assoluta certezza il titolo di MVP del giorno per la sua imbattibile performance in top lane.

Anche i Counter Logic Gaming Europe sono avanzati ai quarti di finale dopo aver battuto i Saigon Jokers. Mentre i Jokers hanno mostrato grandi performance contro i NaJin Swords ed hanno ottenuto una grande vittoria contro i Dignitas, i CLG EU sono stati capaci di accumulare un vantaggio in early game nel loro match. Da li, sono stati capaci di snowbollare verso la vittora, scegliendo di ingaggiare i loro avversari solamente con un grande vantaggio dalla loro parte. I Najin Swords avanzano e si scontreranno domani contro i Taipei Assassins, mentre i CLG EU dovranno battersi contro il Team WE.

For the first round of the World Playoffs, eight teams faced off in two groups for a chance to move on to the quarter finals against the seeded teams Team SoloMid, Moscow Five, Team WE, and Taipei Assassins. With only half of the teams advancing today, every match was a battle for tournament survival, and the best-of-one format meant there were no second chances.

Group A

In the first Group, Azubu Frost, Invictus Gaming, Counter Logic Gaming NA, and SK Gaming were all thrust into the arena. The first game was an explosive back and forth between Azubu Frost and Invictus Gaming. Invictus scored an early lead over Frost and managed to hold onto it for the entire first half of the game. However, a disastrous Baron fight for them resulted in Frost pulling off a steal to take the lead with minimal losses. By picking hard-scaling champions like Jax, Frost was able to last until their late-game power kicked in and turned the match around.

The second highlight match of the group featured SK Gaming and CLG NA, who were each down one game after losses to Frost and iG respectively. Both teams went for global map presence, with SK picking up Shen while CLG NA ran three Teleport spells. After a sneaky Baron kill, SK Gaming attempted to kick in the door on CLG’s mid. This opened a window of opportunity for Doublelift to split-push with a promoted minion while his team held the line. Suddenly, the base race was on! Despite SK having the Baron buff in their favor, it became quickly apparent that CLG was in the lead as SK attempted to Recall and defend. A few quick teleports from CLG NA brought the game to a white-knuckle finish.

Despite their impressive second game, neither CLG NA nor SK Gaming were able to advance past the group stage. Azubu Frost would draw TSM in the next round, while Invictus drew Moscow Five.

Group B

NaJin Sword, Counter Logic Gaming Europe, Saigon Jokers, and Dignitas made up the second group of the day, and the evening games were just as fierce as the morning. Saigon Jokers put on an impressive performance in their first match against NaJin Sword, but like the Frost vs. iG match, Sword managed to draw the game out until their superior late-game comp won them the match. The rest of the group seemed like a warm up for Sword as they rolled through Dignitas and CLG EU in quick games. Maknoon clearly earned the award for MVP of the day for his unbeatable performance in top lane.

Counter Logic Gaming Europe also advanced to the quarterfinals after routing the Saigon Jokers. While the Jokers performed well in their match against NaJin Sword and had scored an upset victory over Dignitas, CLG EU was able to seize an advantage early on in their match. From there, they were able to snowball to victory, choosing to engage their opponents only when they had a huge advantage. NaJin Sword moves on to face Taipei Assassins tomorrow, while CLG EU will do battle with Team WE.
